Need to find a Lawyer?

The views expressed about how to Find a Lawyer should not be construed as legal advice. Consult your solicitor before acting on anything.
There are literally thousands of lawyers to choose from for your problem.
- Find a Lawyer - At some point in your life you may need to find a lawyer (to prepare a document, give effect to a transaction or for court). Unfortunately, lawyers are very expensive and as a result many consumers decide to go it alone. Getalawyer aims to reduce costs, through competition, so you can get a better deal.
- Reducing Costs - On Getalawyer you can ask lawyers to disclose to you how much they might charge you to do something specific, or to take a task up to a particular stage. By being task oriented and not fully servicing every aspect of a legal problem you can save money in that an 'unbundled product' is often cheaper than a 'packaged deal'.
- Lawyers and Advertising - Did you know that lawyers have not always been allowed to advertise? As a result lawyers have traditionally had to build their practices on the basis of personal reputation and contacts. Some lawyers are very good at 'exploiting their social networks' to attract clients and are known as 'rainmakers'. Lawyers who do not network as well need to rely on 'word of mouth' recommendations. On Getalawyer clients make decisions about who to use based on the lawyer's potential fees and stated experience - not on who the lawyer knows.
- Ask your friends - It is almost certain that someone in your friendship circle has needed to Find a Lawyer to help them. Your friends can give you useful advice about who they saw, what results were achieved and whether they liked working with this lawyer. This is a great starting point so make a note of the lawyer and write down their email address.
- Check the Law Society database - Your local Law Society has listings for all the Lawyers you could hope to find and can tell you where their offices are, what areas of the law the lawyer practices in and whether that lawyer has been the subject of disciplinary proceedings. This is an important background check and if, for instance, your lawyer has had any complaints filed against him or her then you now know about it.
- Research cases that this lawyer has appeared in - Another fairly easy step is to go to Austlii.edu.au and do a search for the name of your Lawyer to see what cases he or she has appeared in. Whilst you may not want to grapple with the legal issues involved in the case you should make sure you know who the lawyer acted for and what the outcome was. This is a great way to determine whether or not this particular lawyer is a WINNER!
- Compare lawyers in terms of price and experience - Now that you know which Lawyers interest you go to Getalawyer.com.au and upload your problem, by either staying anonymous or by asking for a conflicts search (checking the lawyer can act for you). Once you have created a profile invite the lawyers whom you are interested to find to compete for your work and if they enter your contest you will be able to find out, in a general sense, what you may be charged and why that lawyer considers his or her experience to be relevant.
- Rate your lawyer - At the conclusion of your case, or at any time before then, why not rate your lawyer so other users of the site can have the benefit of your experience?
